EU Entry/Exit System (EES): 2025 Major Europe Travel Update

If European travel is on your travel horizon for 2025, here is an essential update for you: From October 12, 2025, the EU entry/exit system will be implemented, and it will change the way of travel to any of the EU countries.

This new system will affect all types of travelers, especially the non-EU ones. For example, travelers from the USA or the UK, or any of the countries that allow visa-free travel, have to go through the EES system.

We’ve listed all the key details of EES to help make your 2025 Europe travel smooth and hassle-free at the border.

What Is EES and Why Is It Being Introduced?

EES is a new digital system that replaces the old way of manually stamping passports. The goal is to:

  • Make border crossing quicker

  • Improve security

  • Track how long travelers stay

  • Spot overstays and fake documents

Think of it as the EU moving from paper logs to smart, automated tech at the borders.

What Changes for You as a Traveler?

1. No More Passport Stamps

Your travel information will now be logged digitally, eliminating the need for physical passport stamps. The EES will digitally log your entry and exit instead.

2. One-Time Biometric Registration

If you visit any EES country for the first time after October 12, 2025, you have to go through a quick biometric screening process. This includes fingerprinting and taking a picture of your face.

This is done at a self-service kiosk or with a border officer. Once done, the system stores your data for three years, which means your future entries will be much faster.

3. Automatic Stay Tracking

The system will be keeping track of the 90/180-day rule. That means you can stay up to 90 days in any 180 days. No need to count stamps or guess—EES will handle it.

Which Countries Will Use the EES?

The EES will be active in 29 countries, covering most of Europe’s popular travel spots:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

Note: Ireland and Cyprus are not part of this system. They’ll continue with manual passport stamping.

What If You’re Visiting Multiple Schengen Countries?

Good news—you only register once. Let’s say you fly into France, take a train to Italy, and drive to Germany—your entry gets recorded in France, and your exit is logged when you leave the Schengen Area. You won’t need to re-scan at each internal border.

The system will automatically track your entire trip.

What About Travel by Road, Train, or Ferry?

The EES isn’t limited to just air travel. If you’re entering Europe by car, train, bus, or ferry, you’ll still go through border checks where the same biometric registration happens. Busy terminals like Eurostar, Eurotunnel, and the Port of Dover are already working on installing self-check kiosks to speed things up and reduce waiting time.

Tip: When at land crossings and stations, consider giving yourself some extra time, especially in the first months after its launch.

Old System vs. New EES: What’s the Difference?

Feature

Old Way (Before 2025)

New EES (From Oct 2025)

Passport Check

Manual stamp by the officer

Digital scan + automated logging

Biometric Data

Not collected

Fingerprints + facial photo collected

Stay Tracking

Based on stamps (not always reliable)

Automatically tracked

Overstay Detection

Hard to spot

Real-time monitoring

Repeat Trips

Manual check each time

Faster after the first visit

Border Security

Basic document check

Advanced fraud detection + safety

What About ETIAS? Is That Part of EES?

Not quite. EES and ETIAS are two different systems:

  • EES = Entry registration at the border

  • ETIAS = Pre-travel online authorization (like the U.S. ESTA)

ETIAS will commence around late 2026, and once implemented, the online application for ETIAS will need to be completed by everyone before leaving for the trip, including short vacationers.

Therefore, if you travel anytime around late 2025 to early 2026, then you are merely on the sights of EES, at least for now.

Do You Need to Do Anything Before Traveling? Or When Do I Need To Apply for EES

You do not need to do anything in advance for the EES process. It is an automated process. Once you arrive at the airport or port of the listed country, your screening will be done on the spot.

But here’s what you should do:

  • Be ready to scan your passport, fingerprints, and face at your first point of entry

  • Leave extra time for border control, especially at airports, train stations, and ports

  • Keep your passport handy, as it's still your main ID

How Will EES Benefit Travelers Like You?

It might seem like more work at first, but here’s how the EES actually helps:

  • Faster border checks after your first trip

  • No more relying on smudged or missing stamps

  • Easy to keep track of your 90-day limit

  • Better safety with biometric security

  • Less chance of mistaken overstays

Key Takeaways Before You Travel

  • Starting October 12, 2025, the EES replaces passport stamping

  • You’ll give fingerprints + facial photo on your first visit

  • Your data stays valid for 3 years

  • ETIAS is separate and will launch in late 2026

  • Applies to air, road, ferry, and train travel

  • No need to apply in advance—but do expect delays during early rollout

Final Word

The world of travel is moving fast—and smarter. While the new EES system would have taken a few minutes more in your very first visit, it is there to smooth your future travels further and make them safer and secure. So, if you ever dream of sitting down to have an espresso in Vienna, stroll around the castles of Portugal, or cruise through the Swiss Alps, just remember this little thing at the border.

So yes, your trip might begin with getting your fingerprints scanned, but it would end with a bunch of great memories.
